About this book

The main character 'Cinderella' in French is 'Cendrillon' meaning 'covered by ashes' or worthless. However, the word 'Cinderella' now has a much better meaning. It means, becoming successful overnight. This story makes one think about real beauty—being beautiful inside. The stepmother and the stepsisters treat Cinderella badly but Cinderella continues to be nice to them. The story also shows that goodness is rewarded, and teaches children to be kind and warm hearted. But perhaps, the magical moments of the story, when the pumpkin, the mice and the lizard transform at the tap of the wand, are a child's favourite and also help to stimulate the imagination

About the author

Charles Perrault (1628 - 1703) was a French poet and a critic. He is now known as the father of French Children's Literature. He enjoyed poetry when he was young and wrote many poems. Perrault worked as a lawyer, public servant and an architect. It was only after he became a grandfather, that he decided to collect folk tales for his grand children. So in 1697 he compiled Tales and Stories of the Past with Morals putting together old French tales. "Cinderella" was one of the stories in the collection
