About this book

The Arabian Nights is said to have emerged from a legendary tale of a Persian King and his clever Queen. The King had been betrayed by his wife. Furious, he married the maidens in his kingdom one after another only to behead them the very next day. After he killed many women, he was married to his vizier's clever and beautiful daughter Scheherazade. To save herself from being killed, she told him stories every night, each time stopping at dawn with a cliffhanger, thus forcing him to keep her alive for another day to finish the tale. The stories continued for 1001 nights. After listening to the stories, the king became wiser and repented his mistakes. He did not kill Scheherazade, and in fact, made her the new Queen. The Arabian Nights consists of three longer stories, namely, 'Aladdin', 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves' and 'The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor', and many other shorter tales. 'The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor' narrates the several adventures Sinbad incurs while he sailing to various cities to trade. These are described vividly with extraordinary imagination and capture the interest of adults and children alike.

About the author

'The Adventures of Sinbad' is taken from 'The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor', one of the stories in 'One Thousand and One Nights', also known as 'The Arabian Nights', because many of these tales trace their roots back to ancient Arabia and Persia. The tales have been collected over many centuries by various authors, translators and scholars in many countries. In 1717, a French orientalist, Antoine Galland, translated the stories as The Arabian Nights, comprising 12 volumes, and introduced them to Europe. That is how the stories became known across the whole world
