About this book

This collection of short stories was conceived as a festschrift in honour of Ruskin Bond, whose popular and enduring tales of childhood betray so much simplicity, understanding and compassion. Under the auspices of Namita Gokhale Editions and Roli Books, a group of creative writers spent their time dreaming and introspecting at Mussoorie and Landour in the Garhwal hills. These days of innocence spent in Ruskin’s company are documented by a series of dramatic photographs by famed photographer Harmit Singh and are collected in this highly personal and intense anthology on themes of childhood and adolescence. The first of a continuing series, Writer’s Retreat Vol. I is a spontaneous and evocative selection of memory, nostalgia, and remembrance.

About the author

Ruskin Bond, the old man of the mountains, came to live in Mussoorie in 1963 after many frustrating years in the plains. A man of many facets, he will recognise an old tombstone with the same alacrity that he will a paradise flycatcher and more. This book is the result of two decades of research and collecting. Poet, essayist, storyteller, with over forty books published all over the world, Bond’s manuscripts and papers are in turn now collected by the Special Collections Library of Boston University, USA.
