The Hindustan Times Leadership Initiative is an important intellectual landmark in the capital. Every year, the country’s most respected newspaper gathers together key figures from India and the world to discuss pressing concerns as well as to look at areas of political and economic cooperation. The theme for the Leadership Initiative for 2004 was ‘India and the World: A Blueprint for Partnership and Growth’. Held in New Delhi in November, speakers of the initiative included Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former British Prime Minister John Major, former US Secretary of State Dr Henry Kissinger and the Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga. Over two days the speakers and delegates deliberated on ways to build bridges of economic prosperity and political peace that would benefit not only the South Asian region but the world at large.
