This volume contains translations of some of the best stories by Sarat Chandra Chatterji, one of the greatest figures in modern Indian literature. Apart from Devdas and Srikanta, famous novels presented here in an abridged form, the selection includes some deeply moving stories which have thus far not been accessible to the English reader. In his introductory essay, the translator has given a brief outline of Sarat Chandra’s life and discussed the distinctive features of his art and technique.
