About the author
Maj Gen (Dr) R.M. Kharb, AVSM has spent nearly four decades breeding, rearing, training and treating dogs. As a young captain of the Remount & Veterinary Corps (RVC) he successfully commanded two army dog units in counter-insurgency operations.
Decorated twice—by the chief of army staff with his commendation medal, and by the president of India on 26 January 1996 with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal—Maj Gen (Dr) Kharb, AVSM is a fellow of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences, India. He also has the singular distinction of introducing a new versatile breed—the Belgian Shepherd—into the Indian Army.
